Question How to monitor applications using internet

I am using Debian and I wanted to know how I could monitor my applications and check if they are using any bandwidth. Since I have a lot of space in my hard disk I have got into a habit of downloading anything that seems interesting. Now I wanted to check if some of the application are using internet without my permission. I can check if they are running and eating up RAM with 'top' command but have no idea how to check if they are using internet.
Please help me regarding this.
Thank you

It is possible. You can find many options on web search engines like ntop
