How to make a wired network connection "on-demand"

I leave my machine on most of the time, and only use the network connection occasionally to browse the web and such. I would like to limit exposure to scans and such as much as possible, so I would like to have my network connection be "on-demand"... turned on when I'm going to access the web, and then turn off after it is unused for a while. How could this be done?

Running Debian Wheezy stable and Gnome 3. I know I could click it on and off using the network icon on the toolbar, but it would be cool if I could automate it in case I forget to turn it off.

The OS is going to make network-level requests of its own accord for certain services (like NTP to keep your time in sync). So, the only way you can do this will be manually.

Alternatively, if you're concerned about security, turn on firewalling with iptables.
