hi, I am having problems in installing a globespan virata modem in redhat linux 9.0. I downloaded the drivers from a web site(eciadsl). I am not sure whether the drivers are correct. when I installed the drivers
the power light of my modem started to glow but the link light started to blink and never became stable. I think the drivers are right and i dont know to install the drivers. I need help.

Sounds like the drivers went in fine but there is a problem with the router config, can you connect to it's management interface?

sorry, i dont know how to do that can you give the procedure to connect to the modem management interface. In a manual that i referred it is given that before installing the modem type 192.168.xx.xx (i cant remember exactly the ip address) in the URL field of the browser if that is what you asked for then i am not able to connect neither i was able to connect in windows

Erm, that's a very fractured statement with not a lot of punctuation to help define your meaning, can you try to clarify yourself a little?

Hey, I've got the same modem. I'm a *complete* linux newbie. I mean I can just about get to the terminal.
So, I found the instructions on the eciadsl site really hard to follow. I did try several variations over the last few days, but i'm really stumped. Would much appreciate it if someone could walk me through the install procedure :

Also when i tried to install it using the rpm -i command, i got a "cannot execute binary file" But do i have to install it through the terminal>? i tried double clicking on the package and it looked like something was happenening, but nothing ever did!

And i downloaded the help files off off redhat.com, but they're in .rpm format, and i don't know how to read them! they're all garbled when i opened them in open office and i certainly can't install them...

help!

hello mju.cat, First of all I would suggest that if you haven't bought the modem then ask your ISP to provide you with a ethernet modem. I say this because it very easy to configure an ethernet modem in Linux (I fact you need not even configure anything). If that is not possible then do the follwowing steps:

a. download appropriate drivers from eciadsl.com (make sure that you download the drivers for your kernel). for redhat 9.0 the kernel version is 2.4.20-8. It can vary among distributions.

b. Do the steps as given in the readme file.

c. The problem arises when you are asked for the sync file. There are about 50 sync files and you have to find in trial and error manner which one suits your modem. Sometimes you make be very unfortunate that none suits your modem. If for a particular sync file your link light becomes stable then that's the right one.

To be honest, I did not try all the sync files. My modem did not work for the sync files that I tried and so I got vexed and moved to an ethernet modem. Ethernet modems are faster than USB counterparts and are compatible with all OSs available in the market (unless your ethernet NIC is very uncommon). If you have plans of installing any other OS (say solaris) then go for an ethernet modem.

I was actually resisting changing to ethernet 'cause i didn't have a card But I think i'll just go and buy one now.
