How to find NIC usage %?

Anyone know of a simple way I could query the nic to find a usage percent, or saturation of the link %?

Trying to avoid lmsensors if possible. I tried digging through proc, but couldn't find much :)

Thanks

iftop is pretty good for that sort of information:

Well, I am looking to call this from a program, and then use the output. I just wrote my own that called TCPdump and analyzed the output file.

Thanks
