How to do Network Discovery

Hi Everybody,

I am a new user to this group and this is my first thread in this
networking group. My Query is as follows.
I am planning to build a Enterprise Network Management Software. As a feature of the software we have to discover the network and categorize the discovered elements such as Desktop, Servers, switches, routers etc. What are the availbale methods of network discovery other than ARP and ICMP.And also how to classify the discovered elements .

forgive me for sounding a little harsh, but you intend to build enterprise class software yet know very little about the subject matter you are going to be dealing with??? you need to go away and check out the potential competition and see what they do. I use OpenNMS at work, and it is superb... other points to mention along similar lines... how to classify them? well that's down to your design and your choices. if you need help have your own ideas in the first place i would be concerned.

Auto Discovery and Classification of Network Elements

One way of Classifying the network elements is to build a Knowledgebase that will contain signatures corresponding to characteristics of Network Elements.Signature can be ip forwarding
is enabled in case of routers and open ports for servers etc. Checking the operating system version etc will also give the knowledge whether the system is Linux/Windows client/server etc.But I
want to know whether there are any standard methods for doing these things which are followed by other softwares.I have gone through
the web but I could not get any standards.
