How to create virtual ethernet on CentOS 5

Dear All,

How to create virtual ethernet on Centos 5?.. I have configured /etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth0.1 as follow:

BOOTPROTO=none
GATEWAY=172.16.253.5
HWADDR=00:1B:11:BA:88:69
DEVICE=eth0:1
IPV6PREFIX=""
MTU=""
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
BROADCAST=172.16.253.255
IPV6ADDR=""
IPADDR=172.16.253.3
NETWORK=172.16.253.0
ONBOOT=yes
VLAN=yes

but still not working ..

pls help

May be its a blind hit but try changing file name to /etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth0:1
