how to connect to my SSH Server

Hi, all the linux guys salam

I am having a DSL modem and provider has enabled NAT on the modem I have the external IP address and internal address I am runing my SSH server on my internal IP address now the problem I am having is when I connect to the ssh server

ssh my.external.ipaddress

and doesn't connect to the internal ssh server

I don't know what to do with this I called the provider asking him could i disable the NAT from the modem and use the address on one of NIC card. but they say that it would not work could some one help me with. and plus I don't have any firewall on my DSL modem.

thanks
shahz

first port of call would be to check out http://portfoward.com to get your router to forward an extneral port on the router into the ssh server. that's really all that's required other than a possible firewall change on some routers, depending how they work.

hmm, odd http://www.portforward.com works though. hate it when dns and webservers do that... i can't tell you exactly what to do as i don't know what router you have, hence the link.

Exactly how to forward a port is device-dependent. Your router manual (or asdl modem manual) should tell you. If you know how to access the controls in the router/modem then you might be able to just figure it out.

Beyond that you need to check the settings in your sshd_config to make sure the daemon isn't restricting addresses that can access it to the LAN only.
