first the current Redhat Enterprise Linux is RHEL 6.4

6.2 is a bit OLD

second it is it is NOT FREE , you have to BUY the required support contract !!!!!!
it is REQUIRED!!!!
the standard 1 year single computer home install is $ 299 PER year

there really is no way around NOT buying the required support contract

or

install the FREE rebuild of RHEL
CentOS 6.4

Also keep in mind
that RHEL and the free rebuilds like CentOS and ScientificLinux are SERVER CLASS operating systems
they were designed fore running on a SERVER

now desktop use is normally not a problem except for VERY VERY new hardware
redhat is very conservative the software used is OLD fully patched and secure but OLD

the goal is stability and ZERO and i do mean ZERO crashes

RHEL also dose not run well on laptops
it was NEVER desinged to run on them and there is VERY little laptop support

so if you are going to stay with RedHat
buy the license !!!!!!!
or install CentOS 6.4

or a more NEW user friendly os like Linux Mint 15

redhat documentation assumes that YOU ARE already a computer System Administrator with YEARS of linux experience

CentOS also uses the redhat documentation

This is from CentOS and should help. As JohnVV says, CentOS is the recompiled source of RHEL so what works for one should work for the other.

http://www.server-world.info/en/note...itial_conf&f=3

FYI: Also, not meaning to disagree with JohnVV, but RHEL is Enterprise Class. While this means that it is suitable for servers, it doesn't mean that it 100% designed to run on a server. I installed CentOS on one of my laptops and it runs very well. While modern hardware can be an issue with stock CentOS, spending a few minutes looking up the various repositories (http://elrepo.org/tiki/tiki-index.php for kernel upgrades).

The thing to consider with CentOS/RHEL/etc, is that they are very small distributions. Unlike Debian which contains almost any package you can imagine, RHEL contains very little. You are very likely to want to add RPMForge, EPEL at a minimum, even if running as a server (I think PHPMyAdmin is in EPEL).

Anyway, JohnVV is correct in saying that RHEL is very stable in more ways than one - it won't crash often, and it won't change very much. Even upgrading firefox is a big deal, and only done in point releases, and not as and when a new one is released.

If you want this kind of stability, RHEL/CentOS is fine. If you want more modern software, but also with a potential drop in stability, look else where.
