How to connect/hang up dialup remotely?

I am using a dialup connection (using kppp) as a shared internet connection.

I would like to be able to dial and hangup this connection remotely, without having to come inside (yay wireless!) and hang it up. On the gateway itself the commands "kppp -cmindspring" and "kppp -k" dial and hangup, but attempting to run those commands from a ssh session result in a "Cannot connect to X server" error.

Is there any way I can either 1) run those commands and have them talk to the "local" X server on the gateway, without trying to send me the graphical whatnots over ssh, or 2) connect/disconnect the connection over ssh using something else?
