How to configure DNS for email?

Suppose I have a website with the name of the kind www.machinename.domainname.

I intend to host an email server on another machine accepting email addresses like aroop@machinename.domainname

How can this be done? What is the kind of DNS entry that I need to make?

E-mail servers use the MX record in DNS to determine which server to send an e-mail to based on a domain name. You can specify more than one e-mail server, like a primary/backup.

A typical MX record entry looks like IN MX 10 IN MX 20

The 10 and 20 are the priority for that mail server. An MTA like sendmail will deliver to the e-mail server with the lowest priority first (10), if that one is down, it will then try the next highest priorty server (20). Obvioulsy, you would also need an address record (A) for smtp1 and smtp2 that pointed to the IP addresses of your mail servers.
