how to combine two (three) network cards/cables for better bandwidth?

Hello all,

we have two computers running Ubuntu/XUbuntu exchanging lots of data.
Both computers have each two independent Gigabit network cards and are connected by one network cable.
I am would lay another (independent) cable connecting the unused NIC of each computer, I am sure that Linux allows to somehow combine those two connections for better bandwidth.
My question is how to do it. I tried to google for but obviously didnt use the right search terms...
All help is much appreciated Thanks

Search for Linux NIC bonding. Keep in mind if you have a switch between these two PC's it has to support it, too.
