how to automate ssh login?

I'd like to login to my university computer with minimal hassle.

The problem is that this computer is not directly connected to the internet, so I first have to login to another computer and login to my machine from there on. This makes transferring files quite a hassle, since I first have to upload them to the "middleman" and then transfer them to my university computer.

How can I simplify this process?

well you could run a tunnel through the middle device using stunnel or something, but i guerss what you're more interested in would probably be shared key authentication? check the ssh key authentication guide in our LinuxAnsers subsite for details of how to avoid typign in your passwords each time.

I have attempted this many times and I have not set a passphrase. When attempting to authenticate I get prompted for a passphrase even though one is not set. I hit enter and it prompts me again. Eventually it prompts me for my password. What am I doing wrong?
