How IP address vanishes when ethernet cable is removed.

we are developing a driver which emulates ethernet driver. In the case of e1000e driver the ipaddress of the interface eth0 vanishes when ethernet cable is removed.
We would like to create similar behaviour , can anybody help please.

Develop in a virtual machine where you can disconnect the nic via the VM controls?

Not sure it should loose the ip address either. One web page suggested a cause that two nic's or wi-fi causes this behavior. I mean other than dhcp lease lost.

Dear Jefro,

I could narrow down that clearing of ip address is done by network manager in fedora-12.
If we deselect the option <controlled by network manager> , in the following place system->administration->Network->eth0
then ipaddress is not cleared after removing ethernet cable.

I could see that network manager auto detects the insertion of USB-ETHERNET adapter. If anybody have knowledge about how this is done please
share the information.

Regards,
arjun
