how does dns/host names work on local lan

i have read some threads and im just a little confused.

i have 4 machines on a local network. linksys wireless, 3 os x and 1 suse 9.2 box. i know that the general answer is to set static ip address and be done with it, but i am curious as to how this works.

The macs are able to resolve the names of the machines on the lan without any problems, but linux is not doing so well. i can not use host or nslookup and get any data on the servers. im also running nmb, and trying nmblookup <client> and that does work.

anyways, my question is - how do i get dns to work inside the local area network, this is just a home network, do i need to run a dns server - i thought that the linksys would take care of that.

is there a way to set up dns without relying on static dns?

thanks
-g

Open Yast, then look in Network Devices, then open Network Card and configure your card to use dns lookup to obtain ip address. It should fix things up.

the linksys will probably be running a dns server (look on linksys website to determine how to configure it), and by setting up your network card to use dns that might make things easier.
