how do you install samba from source

i keep reading the readme file and when i execute

Code:

#smb -v

or

Code:

samba -v

to check if it installed successfully but it just gives me an error saying the command wasn't found whats up with this thing

the way i installed it was

Code:

#./configure --prefix=/usr/samba
#make 
#make install

idk i can't tell if i am installing it to the right path because i haven't put in a directory during the installation

how do you tell the installation which directory to put it in, it came out under webmin but i was trying to make smbclient working do i can recieve smb shares from a linux machine

if not a solaris and bsd machine as well if thats possible
