Question How do you get a network printer working in Linux Mandrake 8?

How do you get a network printer working in Linux? I know you have to go to the networking thing and all and I can get everything right except when it asks me for the IP adress and location of the printer I'm screwed because I know what make it is and the drivers are part of Mandrake they come as one of the printers that are supported withought trouble but I don't know the adress of the printer so I can't get it to work. Please help me!

Thanks

If you are installing a windows shared printer it is in the printcap file. //machine/share

look up printcap file howto it turns up a lot of docs on setups

also you should be able to do this

smbclient -L winmachinename

you will see your printer and folders.

No I'm using a network Printer

No the printer isn't run through windows it is connected to the network directly. It is the HP2100M and it has preinstalled drivers in Mandrake to support it but I don't know the location of it on the network or it's IP adress thats the problem. Please Help! Thank you for trying though I apreciate it.

Hi-

I don't do networking but I thought Till (Mandrake's CUPS maintainer) might have written something about this. Here is one page where he talks about ip's for the printer *machine*:

http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article...id=515&lang=en

Got that from a search in MandrakeForum for articles by Till (don't know if this url persists):

Good luck!

Do you have win machines on your network that have it set up? If so, you should be able to find the info from there.

Network Printer

Or you could go to the printer and Print a TEST PAGE, all the info yo need is there, like IP address etc. regarless or the operating system, the printer has this info in the BIOS.
You can check your printer manual to find out how to print your test page.
