How do I upgrade my Linksys B router to Linksys G router ??

I have been using the B version for many years...just got the G version for a B-day gift. I run OpenSuSE 11.3 and XP on one computer...but I have several (3) wireless laptops in my house plus a xbox wireless. I also have 2 other ethernet computers connected to the B version. Can someone provide me with some links/info on how-to. When I did a Google search all I came up with is firmware upgrade...which I've done for the B version. Is it as easy as taking out the old...configuring the new ??
Your thoughts/suggestions are much appreciated...thanks

Yes. It is just a matter of just taking out the old and configuring the new. The configuration should also be basically the same. One thing you may want to think about is whether to run run the router in B/G or G-only mode. If some of your wireless devices don't support 802.11g, then you have to run the router in B/G mode. But, if you have all 802.11g compatible devices, then running in g-only mode could give you slightly better performance.

thanks z1p for your reply...how do I know whether my

devices/computers are running b verus g ? This router was a bday gift back in 7/10 which I have tried to install once before. (I forgot to post originally) When I tried to install it then it wouldnt stay online.

Meaning that which ever device/computer wanted to get online I would have to restart/reboot the said device/computer before it would connect to the internet...and then somtimes that device/computer would only stay online for a limited time frame. Which is why I reverted back to the b version...thoughts on that ?

Since I tried to install before...how do I get rid of the previous settings within the router?...there's a button on the back of the router, I think it resets everything to factory settings...should I try that ?

You need to figure out what they are using for a wireless network adapter. It should either say what it is on it or on the window boxes you can check in the device manager.

I would expect all your connected computers to have to reconnect, either by rebooting or resetting the connection. Having to keep reconnecting is a different story and something none of us want. Exactly what models and versions of routers do you have. Knowing will help.

Yes there should be a factory reset button and that would be the way to get the router back to its default settings.

I don't know what model and version linksys you have, but I have to say I have mixed results with the WRT54G. Some seem rock solid, others have been so flacky I've had to replace the linksys firmware. Strangely this has been more on a per unit basis, than based on model/version.

Since you've seem to have some connectivity issues with the new router in the past you may want to check for a firmware update.

There is nothing saying you can not use both. You could add the newer router to the network without to much effort. You will need to admin both setup for the units on the LAN. Basically rules on the two to allow pass of certain services that you may need. Nothing saying that the original cannot remain the gateway to the outside with the new unit just expanding the LAN. It's done all the time.

I suggest that a LQ Search or even scrolling down to see similar threads.

z1p and onebuck...

For z1p...I too have the WRT54G...and no I never tried the firmware upgrade, perhaps that would have resolved the connectivity issue. I'm sorry for my stupidity but I'm not sure what you mean by "It should either say what it is on it or on the window boxes you can check in the device manager." But I will check device manager for the settings...?? Yes I will reset to factory settings upon installing the device and before I hook anything up to it.

For Onebuck...that sounds like a great idea but I dont have the know how...is there a url_link/setup_instructions that you can provide this novice.

Thanks to both of you!!
