Respected Linux Lovers,
I'm actually a newbie here.
Last month, I managed to successfully get BSNL Dataone running on FC3 in my uncle's computer at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
That connection used a Huawei SmartAX M1800 Router connected through the Ethernet card.
I actually didn't have to do any configuration except at the Installation Stage, where I entered the following:
IP address: 192.168.1.11
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS IP addresses:
Primary: 61.1.96.69
Secondary: 61.1.96.71
After that, I was able to access the broadband without a hitch.
<I have already reported this at the "Success Stories" forum.>
Now, I'm home for my semester hols. and I would like to get broadband running on FC3 at my house at Nagercoil, Kanyakumari.
The problem is that we are only the 9th customer in my hometown to take the broadband connection and since everyone else has MS Windows, the technical helpdesk is not able to give me any help for Linux configuration here at home.
They have not stored the username and password in the modem (as is done in Chennai). Rather, the tech. setup a dial-up bridge to dial-up the broadband connection instead of the usual "always-on"broadband.
To top that, the router they placed at home uses the USB port to connect and not the Ethernet card.
Also, when I contacted the help desk, they told me that since there are only a small number of customers using Dataone at Nagercoil, they
support only the dial-up bridge and they added that if I store the username and password in the router itself, it would not work. (I tried storing them and sure enough, Internet did not get connected! )
When I looked up the LAN IP properties in Windows, I found that the computer has been setup to automatically get IP addresses and the DNS server IP addresses instead of assigning 192.168.1.1 , 255.255.255.0 etc..
One Linux guru I know at Chennai told me that USB Router devive driver support is not plentiful for Linux.
I am now going to install FC3 at my home PC.
I wish to know what to enter at the stage when it asks me for IP addresses, DNS IP addresses etc. .
If anyone knows how to setup broadband using a USB Router, please reply and help me.
I'll be grateful for your help.

All other settings are default factory settings.
I was told that the modem comes preconfigured and the technicians who setup the home connections never enter the modem.
In fact, I was scolded for "meddling with" the modem settings when I phoned them and asked for help!
I'm sorry if my post is too long. It's just that I wanted to clearly outline the problem.
Thanking you in advance,
Yours in the Linux spirit,
Savio.
