How do I make the "Wired Network Disconnected" graphic stop appearing?
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a brand new laptop, an install done by the company I ordered the notebook from. I have some limited experience with Linux and Ubuntu especially.
I know that I'm not connected to a wired network. I haven't so much as plugged in a network cable, but the graphic appears erratically on the right hand side of the screen like I am connecting, then disconnecting. I've tried disabling the eth0 connection altogether, but no dice. I can't figure out how to make it stop.
Suggestions?

Hello,
Have you tried editing the settings for your connections and turning off the option for "Connect automatically?"
Cheers,
Josh

I'm not sure how to do that. Is there something I am missing? I checked in the System -> Preferences - > Network Connections as well as the System -> Administration -> Network Tools, but I don't see an option for automatic connection.
Can I just delete the "Auto eth0" connection?

Don't do that if you (ever) want/need to plug in a wire.
Regardless of the "Connect automatically" (it's in Network connections - highlight and edit the eth0 entry to see it) you should not have this problem. It should only notify when a cable is plugged in/removed.
Boot from a liveCD and see if it happens there. If so sounds like hardware - take the laptop back. Else it's a configuration stuff up - get them to fix it.

Found the option for connect automatically, and that does stop the message.
You said it shouldn't do that anyway? Taking it back will be difficult as I would need to ship it back, and probably on my dime.
Also, hypothetically speaking, if the Auto eth0 were to get deleted, how would one get it back?

You would just have to create a new connection for your eth0 device, that is all. It's not hard at all man using NetworkManager.

No worries. I made a new connection, it just didn't look exactly like the original, and I wondered if there was something a little more in depth.
Problem appears to be solved, thanks for all your help guys!
