How Do I Determine if a Network Printer is Offline?

My Linux system does not have any printer attached; I have to print using a printer on a Windows computer. I have installed that printer in the Linux system using cups and a samba connection. If I run lpstat on that printer, it merely gives me the status of the queue. Whether the printer is online or unavailable, it gives the same status (printer idle but enabled). I would like to determine (programatically) whether the default printer is online or not, so that I can select an alternate printer if that one is online. Any suggestions?

You could look at smbclient. I know it will see the printer share; what I don't know is whether the printer share in Windows might still be visible even if the printer is off-line but the Windows box isn't.
