How did you experience setting up your ADSL connection?

The first time I set up my ADSL connection with an Alcatel Speedtouch USB it was a nightmare.
When I installed Gentoo half a year later it was set up in less than 5 minutes. That's a personal record.

I want to know how you experienced setting up the connection.

I've always had a stand-alone modem/router connected via Ethernet, so it's always been a breeze for me.

I did some reading before signing up.
I knew to prefer an ADSL modem that connected to my network card.
Debian has a nice script called pppoeconf.
Then I found I needed to have the nameservers.
Normal.

i voted easy because i use a router (Linksys) which handles everything for me and made my linux box the DMZ host.

I think that this is the best solution if you have more than one computer. I've been considering switching to this option because since two months I have my own local network with two linux boxes in it.

I started with the Alcatel green frog - nightmare. I eventually sorted it out in Mandrake. Finally, I went down the Modem/Router path and I've never regretted it.

it was a nightmare.

But it was also the first thing I ever tried doing in linux. I think I could handle it quite easily these days
