closed ports vs not visible port?

my comp's ports are all opened

if i shutdown a service, that port is not scanned at all..
then what is "closed port"?

--------
my friend is working on a computer (rdh7.3) on campus
but he can't get to it when he gets home..
when i do nmap..
all ports r closed..

when are ports reported as closed..
and can he open the port when he get access to the computer?

thx

Is there a firewall between his home and his computer at campus? Can he ping the box at the campus from home?
How about run a traceroute from home to campus?

He may not have a firewall but, the campus network more thn likely does

One more time if you try to:
telnet ip_address
telnet friends_computer_name

Then try the same thing with ssh

Post the exact error messages

Anther hint is traceroute. It pretty much saying the campus network is not allow anything threw.

Have you friend check with tech support at the campus.

He may need to get set up with remote acctess at the
school. So that he can dail into the network. That usealy
the why it's done ... at least in my vast wordley experience

Or he/she may also have to set the default gateway for the
campus network.... again the quickest way to get this question answer is via campus teck support.

I think I'm missing something here:
Where are you trying this from.? Your home, campus,
your's or his/her box?
