how can I keep connection open with remote vps?

I am setting up a remote VPS but the connection times out and get closed while I do research from my local machine. Restarting it is a slow process on my satellite Internet connection.

Is there a way to keep this VPS connection open?
If I do so, I am likely to burden the fair usage policy of a cheap provider?

Thank you for your help.

If you're accessing the VPS using secure shell, then I would just use something like byobu. It's low bandwidth, useful, and tends to keep most sessions alive.

How are you establishing the connection? For SSH there is autossh which will reopen the connection in case it gets lost.
