How can I close ports?

I have the following ports open..

Starting nmap 3.50 ( ) at 2004-11-27 20:59 PST
Interesting ports on localhost (
(The 1655 ports scanned but not shown below are in state: closed)
22/tcp open ssh
25/tcp open smtp
111/tcp open rpcbind
631/tcp open ipp

and since I don't need ssh nor smtp.. I'd like to turn them off

how can I do that?

I'm using SuSE 9.1 personal

Start YaST.

System > RunLevel Editor

Select the services you want to stop.

Click disable.

Click finish.

Technically that will stop the service, but not close the port. To close the port you would comment out the corresponding entry in the /etc/services file. Shutting down the service or daemon will keep incoming data from being processed by the intended application. Another option would be to set up a firewall to prevent access to the port.

SMTP - Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is used by the sendmail service. You may not want to stop this service since log messages are sometimes sent to the root user using email.
