How can apply group policies on windows clients from Linux Server

Hello

My network contains one linux server (working as file server) and 100 windows 2000 (professional) clients. I use Samba for this purpose. I want to apply group policies. Is it possible or not. Plz help me.

Thanx in anticipation

Bye

I shouldn't think so. It is going to take a lot more than a samba file server to have group policies. Do you even have a domain?

You may be able to restrict access to existing files in the way you want by having the windows machines log on to the linux machine and have the unix file permissions on the files set appropriatly.
newly created files might be a problem since the windows users won't know to set the file world readable or not etc. Setting up user id's for all the windows users on the linux box may be a pain.

reading the samba HOWTO might help.

Are these Windows 2000 or XP clients? If so, go to the Administrative Tools folder in Control Panel, and open up the Local Security Policy template. Under "Local Policies" highlight User Rights Assignments. There you can control which users can shut down the system. I don't think you can stop anybody from locking their desktop, though.

Linuxeagle;

I have the same setup with Windows XP and a Linux server. What I did was set up each computer to have one administrator password (with all permissions) and one user password (with very little permissions). My users cannot access the control panel, chage their desktop picture, or install any programs. But the administrator can.

This is not done throught the Linux server. (If anyone knows how, that would be great). Rather it has to be set up on EVERY workstation individually.

Here is a link on how to set up the policies for only the USER on the Xp or 2000 machine, and not affect the Administrator:

http://www.jsiinc.com/subl/tip5600/rh5619.htm

Hope that helps. I don't know how to set policies from the server.
