"hosts" file setup question - for a unit with no dns entry

What should the listing in the "hosts" file be, for a unit that does NOT have a dns entry

what I mean is this:

ipadress.here.etc fullyqualified-domain-name-that-does-not-exist shortname

Ok - this machine does NOT have a dns entry (and none is needed), so for the "fullyqualified domain-name" what should I enter ?

The IP address again ? or the shortname ? The unit (that I want to refer to) is not available on the web (no public services of any kind), just a lan

TIA !
