can someone please give me an idiot's guide to starting up a web server. I am running knoppix off hd and want to be able to serve up a dreamweaver site preferably using no-ip who i already have an account with. I have tried so hard to get apache to work and get mysql running but no matter how promising it looks it always goes wrong! someone please help me, I am as comfortable in the root console as any girl can be but could one of you guys help me out?
what distro are you using?? what steps have you already taken to install apache/mysql/php on your box?? are you using binary packages or are you compiling from source??
i have tried both source code and binaries for apache, no luck. my mysql efforts mainly involved trying to find packages
i think i might just migrate to suse, sounds so much simpler just configuring Yast!

Me too, I just spent the last three days setting up a home network using two Slackware 10.1 boxes. My next step is to get my ADSL modem working with my server and then I too will be trying to set up my own web server. Given all the trouble I had getting the network going I know that a lot of network and Internet-related how-tos are of little use to Slackware 10.1 users as the file systems are different. If I have any luck with this I will post them on this thread hopefully within the next week or so, so keep an eye out for that. I'm assuming anything I achieve will be of benefit to you too!
Wish me luck
Note to LinuxQuestions.org admins: please add "Slackware" and "ADSL" to your spell-checker!
Sorry, can't help there. I'm a clueless, but learning rapidly, newbie when it comes to networking/Internet. When I have something sensible to say I'll be post something here! Until then you probably know more than me.
croned, it was very easy in suse pro 9.3 but if you get the standard free edition from suse then you might have the same problem finding all the packages as its only a basic install.
plus you will lose everything on the hard drive once it formats it at install
Nothing against knoppix but you may be better off choosing a distro such as Suse (9.2 is available for download) or Fedora where packages and support would be much more forth coming
My personal choice would be Fedora, pretty sure all the packages you need are on the install CD's, Suse is OK but I'm not that much into GUI's you don't really learn much that way
Distribution: ubuntu, RHAS, and other unmentionables

Really simple for newbies, fully fuctional (PHP+PERL+ETC).... and it'll take all the frustration out of trying to build a small web server.
I use it myself.
They've recently productized it, but the free ver. is still good.
