That depends of what would you like to do between the 2 pc´s.

Take in account that mostly whatever you like to use your linnux box to, you can configure it from Mandrake Control Center (Menu: System / Configuration / Configure your computer). One there just use the wizzards to setup what you need.

Ohh, you must install "drakwiz" this is gona be your best friend to configure servers. Just open a terminal windows and type: urpmi drakwiz and accept any deppendencies that you might need to install. After succesfull instalation, when you open mandrake control center, you gonna have the last options called if my memory still works fine, it´s called server wizzards. Just investigate what is each item to.

If you want to share internet you have to open mandrake control center and need to go to internet connection sharing and follow the wizzard. Its gonna install 3 things. 1 a firewall (shorewall) 2. DHCP server 3. A DNS Cache server (Bind) then you only need to put in your w98 box to point the gateway option to your eth1 IP.

If you want to use linux box as a file server to store/retrieve files, you must install Samba Server. (use drakwiz)

If you want to install a webserver, mail server, database server, ftp server ,etc, etc you might wanna use drakwizz too, its easy to set them up this way, if not you gonna have to investigate on each server software page for configuration howto´s and tips.

Hope this helps you in your needs.

On the server create the following file /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall and copy the following code in that file
modprobe iptable_nat
iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A FORWARD -j LOG
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
save and close the file

give it a permission 755

now open /etc/rc.local and copy the following at the end of the file

save and close the file

Now from the command prompt run /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall

On the win 98 machine

change the gateway to the ip address of eth1 of your linux box.

Reboot win98
and you'll be able to use internet on win98
