Home Network help

Hi folks I'm a complete novice here I installed Red Hat 9 last night.

I would like to set up a home network, but haven't got a clue where to start. I think I have all the equipment I need: - a server with two onboard ethernet sockets running red hat 9.0, a couple of Win98SE boxes, an xp home box, a 4 port 10/100 netware hub, a wireless hub (for those difficult to reach places) and an external USR courier v everything modem.

I would like to set my network up so all the pc's connect to the internet through the modem connected to the server (i'll replace it with broadband when it's avaiable here).

Does anyone know of a link to a step by step guide for ignoramouses like my self, or maybe you could point me in the right direction.

I have allready connected everything up, well I haven't added the wireless hub yet (one problem at a time I reckon), but my server and my xp box are connected via the 4 port 10/100 hub.

I've followed my nose a bit and read all the documentation I have and managed to find the network configuration app, it recognises eth0 which I guess is the ethernet socket connected to the hub, but it won't activate. I keep getting the following error: -

Determining ip information for eth0:1 ...failed; no link present... check cable.

any ideas?

First problem is getting that connection. Can you get to the internet using your modem on the server?

er no. The system recognises the modem and it's in the device list but won't activate I get this error "Cannot activate network device ppp0

as a PS to above, When linux boots it shows my modem as a usr 56k courier v everything, but once booted it shows in the device list as a generic modem and gets the above error when tring to activate. Do I need to install a driver for this? I couldn't see anything on the usr website for linux drivers. All help greatly appreciated.
