home network

i have 4 static Ip address's and two desktops, my dsl line goes through a modem and then I have it going to a switch, and then to the ethernet cards on both computers. Each desktop also has wireless adapters not being used. I would like to set up a ftp server on one desktop, I have read many how toos, but it is kind of confusing when they include apache, sql and other database programs. Do I need to be running one of these? What I really want to do is have one desktop running a ftp server with users and passwords so i can share files with friends, and I would like to have both desktops connected with the wireless nics, is this possible, or is there a better way of setting up a network? i am running Suse 9.2 on the desktop I want to setup as the server, and mandrake 10.1 on the other one. what do i need to have installed in order to make this work? suse has many options in yast, dhcp server, dns server, tftp and much more. any advice would be great, or if someone has some links to a friendly how to. thanks

i'm not familiar with tftp, but that might get you there (if it's an ftp server, of course). i am familiar with proFTP and vsFTP. Basically you're looking down the wrong avenues. Yes, Apache is very common, and is in fact, a server, but it is a web server and will not net you ftp.

so look for ftp servers, and how to configure those. if that's all you want, that's all you really need. you can disable apache/mail/whatever other servers suse setup for you.

users and passwords are commonly managed by the system -- if a user has an account on the system, they can get an account to login to your ftp server. the configuration of your server depends upon which server you decide to use.
