History of Networking in the Linux Kernel
Hi everyone,
I have searched on Google for History of Networking in the Linux Kernel: which is the first version of Linux Kernel that supports networking (specifically Internet connection); and the development process of Networking followed by Linux kernel versions (adding features, protocols, etc.). However, i cannot find much of documents for answering these question. So, i still have no answer for these question. Anyone can help me or suggest some ideas for me to find out the answer? Thanks for helping! |
To the best of my knowledge, networking has been in the Linux kernel since the beginning. The Linux kernel was written to published Unix standards, and networking was baked into Unix by the time Linus Torvalds wrote his first kernel.

I have read the source code of linux kernel version 0.01 - the first release of Linus Torvalds and there is not source code for networking. As usually, networking source code is put in "net" folder. And I read the source code of linux kernel 1.0 and found that from this released version forward: linux kernel might support the network service.

If you are reading kernel code, you are way ahead of me and you have my respect.
