Higher port forwarding doesn't work
 

I have a Linksys WRT54G router on my home network.
I ssh into the network to my Debian box.

When I tell sshd (through sshd_config) to listen on port 22, and forward that port through the router everything works fine, from both inside and outside the network.

When I tell sshd to listen on a higher port (I have tried 6022 and 60022) I can get into the box from within the network, but I cannot get in from outside the network.

Any help would be much appreciated.

From what you've posted it sounds like the problem is occuring at point up to and including the router.

I assume you've tried setting up port forwarding for ports 6022 and 60022 on the router.

Other than that its possible that the problem could be with your ISP or a misconfiguration in your firewall not allowing these ports from an external source.

I set up 6022 & 60022 in the router in exactly the same way as 22. The only firewall I have going is the router itself. I have a Comcast cable modem, I haven't heard of them blocking ports, and even if they did don't most ISP's block the lower ports?

Follow-up:

My router fried on Xmas morning, so I connected the cable modem directly to the debian machine. I still can't get on port 60022, but i can get in on 22.
