High packet loss PPP connection
Hi all,
I am attempting to create a connection over a pair of serial modems between two computers. The idea is to allow me to log into the one machine from the other remotely over a telephone line.
I have managed to create the connection using a combination of mgetty, ppp and kppp. The connection is established fine -- kppp brings up a terminal window that allows me to login to the remote machine. Using this terminal I can look around and view things (using the less command). When I click continue, the ppp connection is established.
I know that this connection is established because pinging the remote machine returns some packets at the beginning but then stops. In general, every time I connect the machines and I ping the remote server I get about 5 packets returned and then nothing -- no packets get returned.
Does anyone know of a way to reduce this problem. I can cope with a slow connection but I have to be able to ssh into the remote machine and alter files on it. I also need to be able to send new files from my home machine to the remote machine.
I have tried a range of speeds for the modem and ppp connections with no difference in the results. I have also used most of the pppd options to try and solve the problem.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks
Brian
