help with mrtg and snmp

I configure snmp.conf with:
defcommunity public
defaultport 161

and mrtg.conf:
RunAsDaemon:Yes
Target[r1]: 2: public@servername
MaxBytes[r1]: 1250000
Title[r1]: Traffic Analysis

and when i run "mrtg /path/to/mrtg/cfg --daemon" i get:
SNMP Error:
no response received
SNMPv1_Session (remote host: "servername" [#serverIP].161)
community: "something"
request ID: -1641215040
PDU bufsize: 8000 bytes
timeout: 2s
retries: 5
backoff: 1)

anyone knows why?
