Help with Dial-up
Well, I finally got an external serial modem. I am using ppp to connect. The modem will dial, and you can hear it squealing like it is connecting, and then theres silence for about 10-15 seconds and you can hear the modem disconnect. At first I thought maybe I got my username/password incorrect, because it is LONG (I use RASspy.exe to work around NetZero's software). So I copy it directly into notepad and open it in Ubuntu and it is correct. Next, I thought maybe the DNS settings should be set to dynamic rather than static, so I changed that. No luck. Then after some more research, I found that people couldn't connect unless they disabled their network, so I disabled network eth0. Still nothing. Then I found that someone had used CHAP authentication rather than PAP, which is what it was set on. So I changed that and STILL no luck!
Anyone have any suggestions? They would be greatly appreciated!!
Also, I am using Warty Ubuntu 4.10 if it matters...

Any suggestions?

connect
I could be wrong, but as of 4 or 5 months ago AOL and NETZERO were not linux friendly.(I tried) As soon as I changed ISP, all these "modem" problems disappeared and I was on the net. Call them and confirm whether or not they require proprietary software/authentication to logon to their service BEFORE you spend hours configuring a modem or tracking down a non existent hardware problem.
good luck

It was a username/password error. I had used netzero a couple years ago and after wanting to bypass/remove their junky connection SW found that they encrypt username/PW through there dial-up SW. There are a couple of web sites ( I will not post them here ) that will decrypt your login information just do a search, there not hard to find.
Anyway, that sounds like that may be the problem if it's attempting succesfully to connect to there authentication server.
Good Luck
KC

In case anyone stil uses AOL, I "borrowed" my brothers account when I was on the road and living out of hotel rooms for a bit and used Penggy on FC3 pretty painlessly with dialing in to AOL. I think I spent more time looking for an actual land line phone around campus to dial out of to test my laptop before I left (none of my friends at school have landlines anymore)

I am using the username and password decrypter. It will connect with the exact same information through Windows, which is using PAP authentication.
