HELP !! VIA rhine net driver hangs

I run VIA ethernet driver on AMD PC with Linux 2.4.18 (RedHat 8.0) for practice. I insert the net driver module into Linux kernel, assign an IP address to the net device. However, the kernel does not call "rhine_open". Can anybody give me some clues to figure out an approach to debug .... Here is the procrdure I did :

I did the following commands :

[/usr/src/linux-2.4.18/drivers/net/rhine/] make
[/usr/src/linux-2.4.18/drivers/net/rhine/] insmod ./rhinefet.o
[/usr/src/linux-2.4.18/drivers/net/rhine/] ifconfig eth1 192.168.0.44

Then, I dump the printk messages from /var/log/messages :

Oct 17 04:02:03 testlinux syslogd 1.4.1: restart.
Oct 17 12:48:14 testlinux dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 192.168.0.1 port 67
Oct 17 12:48:14 testlinux dhclient: DHCPACK from 192.168.0.1
Oct 17 12:48:14 testlinux dhclient: bound to 192.168.0.16 -- renewal in 103940 seconds.
Oct 18 15:53:28 testlinux kernel: test_init_module
Oct 18 15:53:28 testlinux kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:09.0
Oct 18 15:53:28 testlinux kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:10.1
Oct 18 15:53:28 testlinux kernel: test Family Adapter Driver Ver. 1.01
Oct 18 15:53:28 testlinux kernel: Copyright (c) 2003 test, Inc.
Oct 18 15:53:28 testlinux kernel: eth1: rhinefet ethernet Adapter
Oct 18 15:53:28 testlinux kernel: eth1: MAC=00:01:B7:00:01:02Mem=0xde000000 IRQ=10
Oct 18 15:53:28 testlinux /etc/hotplug/net.agent: invoke ifup eth1

I don't see the debug messages for my "open" routine. It does not call "stop" routine, when ifconfig deactivates the net device.
