help on tryin to get ADSL Gateway to work with cox internet

hi,
hi have a netopia 3347-02 Wireless ADSL Gateway that i got from at&t. i am no longer with at&t.
i switch over to cox. I have the cox modem. i also have cable on the modem. when i connect a ethnet cable from cox's modem to my laptop my internet works. but i want to use the netopia 3347-02 Wireless ADSL Gateway that i got from at&t cause of the wifi. when i login & connect to the netopia 3347-02 Wireless ADSL Gateway and put it in bridge mode. internet works fine, but im not able to use wifi, im also not able to login into the admin page. i have to do a factory reset on it so i can log back in. So how can i make it work with cox modem?

Do you get a public IP from cox, or an ip that starts with either:
Code:
10.x.x.x
172.16-31.x.x
192.168.x.x
You should disable the dhcp server on the ADSL and just plug in the cox modem in a port where you used to plug in a pc. Then you use the ADSL Gateway as a ethernet switch/wireless AP

Typical home cable service only provides one dynamic IP address based on the device's MAC. So once your laptop connects no other device will work unless you recycle power to the MODEM. And if the MODEM can not detect your wireless device then it will not be able to assign an IP address and therefore no internet. So I do not think it work for your needs.

Either purchase a new wireless router or I assume your laptop has a wireless network adapter so you might be able to use it as an ad-hoc network and connect your wireless devices through it.

Ok, from michaelk's explaination, I guess you get a public IP on your wired ethernet port.

I have no experience with cable internet, but could you try to do this:
Code:
- disconnect your ethernet cable from the gateway.
- power cycle your modem
- connect through wireless
If michaelk (and my comprehension from his explanation) is right, that would mean you can only connect with your laptop, through your wireless AP. From that moment on. (unless you power cycle again)

If that doesn't work, you're out of luck, and need to spend cash on a wireless router with an ethernet uplink port instead of a telephone line connection.
