I've been using Windows my whole life, but I recently decided to try out Linux. After installing Fedora Core 2, I found out that the system was not detecting my NIC. I did some research on the internet, and found out that other people with this ethernet controller (3Com 3C920B-EMB-WNM Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller) also had problems configuring their internet on Linux systems (the NIC is built into Asus P4R800-VM motherboards). I then scavenged a 3Com 3C905-TX ethernet adapter from a retired system. Fedora can see this card, but I can't get it to succesfully work with my system. When I tell internet druid to automatically configure my settings with DHCP it fails to find an IP address, and when I configure it manually I am still unable to connect to the internet. Also, it treats the ethernet card as eth0. I'm not sure whether it should be eth0 or eth1 (because there's already a NIC on my motherboard), or if this even makes a difference. If anyone can help me get things running, I would appreciate it a lot.
Only /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 exists
I ran ipconfig /all in DOS to get my subnet netmask, ip adress, default gateway, and other goodies. I manually entered these into internet-druid (and verified that it was correctly copied to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0). I also entered my DNS servers, but I didn't know the host name or the DNS search path. I actually don't know how to run service network restart, so I restarted the computer and now it is able to bring up interface eth0 (an improvement from before). internet-druid says the device is active, but I still can't connect to the internet.
If anyone is familiar with DOS, do you know if Connection-specific DNS Suffix is the same as the hostname? How can I find out information about my host from Windows? Does anyone know why the NIC integrated onto my motherboard is detected by Windows but not Linux? Also, does anyone else have ideas on what I can try to get my ethernet working?
Are u running fedora as a standalone or networking to ur windoze machine? If u r networking what hardware are u using a hub, router or crossover cable? If u r connecting as a standalone is it a modem, cable, adsl?
Ur hostname is the name u have specified for ur machine eg joe`s pc or ur ip addy
in a terminal window try typing lspci which will give u the output of the pci hardware u have installed
I dual boot on my computer between Fedora Core and Windows XP. I'm a student at UC Berkeley, and I'm trying to connect to the network they have in the dorms.
