HELP! My network is dying!!!
 

Hello all, I have recently loaded redhat 7.1 on a Compaq 1850R. Everything looks good but after a while (appox 2 hours )I loose the network. A reboot fixes all but then the cycle repeats. I am in the process of installing console access so I can see if anything dies, but I thought I would throw this out there anyways in hopes someone has seen this already. Any suggestions?:(

No suggestions, same experience. I just re-up and keep going. Thought perhaps it had something to do with the net having an inactivity limit which, when exceeded, drops the line.

As of yet I haven't got my network working, so feel free to ignore:

If your network-card's 'drivers' are loaded as modules, then I believe that the after a certain time of inactivity they will unload themselves.

When you start your computer as per usual, open a terminal window and type lsmod. If you see some stuff that looks like it could be related to your network then wait. Once the network has been dropped (2h or so?) then do an lsmod again. Check what differences there are. If your suspected network modules have been unloaded then you will not have to reboot. Simply insmod xxxxxx the network module and restart the network (not sure how to do this bit - someone else?). With any luck all should be well. If you want your network to be permanently on, you could try rebuilding your kernel and having the network stuff loaded into the kernel, not as modules.

I'm not sure the modules is the problem... I have setup RedHat 7.1 on a friends machine, and it has been up for over 2 weeks without a reboot, and is still running fine. He has a P200, 64mb ram, 2gig drive... so nothing special.

Are you using iptables, or ipchains? I found the Redhat 7.1 out of the box would start up both iptables, and ipchains, which i found not to work well together, so i disabled ipchains, and just use iptables.

/etc/rc.d/init.d/network (start,stop,restart)

O.k.....thanks to those who point out the complete obvious...like restarting the network...but lets be serious....this is a production machine so I shouldn't have to...these replies treat the symptoms and not the problem.....Also...any replies concerning anything other than a Compaq 1850R are moot. I am sure RH 7.1 works great on a desktop...but I need it to work great on my server. Not trying to be a knob but this is a real problem. I have tried compiling the modules into the kernel and it had no effect...I have also tried telling redhat that it's a Tulip card and that bombed too...this sytem WAS working under 6.2....the disaapointment is setting in....waiting for a reply from RedHat directly after coughing up mucho info for thier tech support...I will post thier answer when I have it...also outcome of thier suggestion....

Well, then compile everything for your machine, and don't use packages... get the main part of the system up, compile the kernel again, make sure to include iptables, and disable ipchains.

and how many people are going to be using _YOUR Exact_ machine :-P which btw i could use as a desktop. The term desktop and server are just what you use the machine for. Yes your compaq peice of crap is designed to be used as a server, but realistcaly it could be used for a door stop if you wanted to.

:mad: O.k.....first of all you knob...if I didn't want the help I wouldn't have posted to this forum in the first place...second if YOU read my original post...I asked about a specific problem with a specific version on a specific machine...which you mistook for "tell me about your buddies home machine"....as for how many people will see this machine? about 6 million a day....and if you have the money to make a 1850R your desktop...a machine which is about 3 times the machine as your buddies MP3 server...you are wasting your time posting to newsgroups...you should be somewhere warmer than Canada....now run off to school now...I think I hear your mom calling you....

I get this cold feeling that you're not too appreciative of any of the help/advice given here. If it worked fine under 6.2, why are you going to 7.1? (i.e. if it aint broke, you don't fix it!). Well, I just checked the specs of your machine, and too be quite honest, I imagine that most of the people who regularly contribute to this forum (all of whom seem to be nice people if you don't piss them off) probably have machines that would piss all over it! Mine included, which I do use as a desktop machine.

This thread is obviously not needed anymore so anyone else think it should be closed?

O.k....this is getting way out of control...All i asked for was info specific to the question I asked...Which was specific...I did not belive I was being hostile...If it was percieved that way...sorry...I build the systems based on requirements from PD..not my choice..I would have rather left it on 6.2...but again..not my choice...I didn't post the question to get into a pissing contest...I actually needed help...which a couple people have provided...the others were moot....of course I could restart the network...but that doesn;t solve the problem does it? The things people have posted ( that were relevant) I tired..they have not worked...I didn't appreciate the attitude of the last guy so I blasted him...you know...they way you just blasted me....so if this is your idea of help ( making smartass remarks instaed of helping)..I would rather not have it...I will cancel this thing myself...nuff said..off to talk to adults.....

So a bunch of use gave you suggestions, which you then insult! If you read my post, you will see why i mention my friends machine, and i know its not the same.
And if you are going to make fun of someones age and education, you should make sure that you are indeed a better person, otherwise you just make yourself look stupid/immature. Read your last post and tell me if "the adults" you speek of would want to talk to you if that is how you respond to help?

Now i think you need to run along and get an education. Make sure to take a course on communication!

I have several machines running 7.1, some slow and some very fast, but all of them are running.

They are all "SERVERS"

if you really think it could be the module thing, try setting up a ping command that runs every now and then.


ping -i 30 213.21.219.129 > /dev/null &


put in startup scripts
