Do you want to configure the network on your ubuntu system from the console? why not use the GUI-util:
Code:
gksudo network-admin
if you really want to do it from the console.

read:
Code:
man interfaces
and edit the: /etc/network/interfaces file
and run:
Code:
/etc/init.d/networking restart

Success!

cheers
