Help!!! Knetwork manager not playing nice with Atheros chip
I've been using linux for a little while now and never had any problems getting my two week old lappy online (wirelessly)...until a couple of days ago :-( I think I might've upgraded some components and shortly after knetwork manager doesn't see any wireless networks (only wired, which there are none). Which wouldn't be so much of a problem as the router is two feet away (at home) but I use it all the time at work and they have loads of open networks to hitch a ride on. I'm not sure exactly why knetwork manager stopped working but any help is greatly appreciated.
##EDIT-----> Not sure of the driver but I'm using Feisty 7.04 and it was a clean install first (then some other lame-a$$ OS second (sorry peeps, needed it for work)). |
i never could get any of those darn things to work in kubuntu other than wlassistant. somehow it has always worked when nothing else would, you may want to try that
|
How would I install it? Any source that I've tried to compile so far just results in errors, something about "failing a sanity check" (dunno what the hell that is in 'puter world).
##EDIT----> Sorry found a deb pkg for it. Many thanks :-) |
No Dice
I just tried to install wlassistant and it gave me an error saying that it couldn't be installed b/c it needs menu. Now I don't know what kind of menu it's talking about but I can't connect to the internet at all to update anything (wired or wireless). I'm not too adept at network stuff and still fairly new to linux so excuse my ignorance folks.

have you tried searching to see if there is an apt package (apt-get fun)...
another thing that you might want to think about doing is running the ifconfig and iwconfig commands to look for networks. If you've upgraded your kernel, you will have to recompile and reinstall the driver for your new kernel (you have to do this for every kernel upgrade). The module is compiled specifically for the kernel you are running. |
Ahaaa! Got it
I found a number of people who were having similar problems and apparently it has something to do with the kernel update xx.14 and the restricted drivers (?)which I had. So I booted from kernel xx.12 and updated ( wireless works under .12 ) and updated to xx.15. Many thanks for all your help fellow LQers :-)

Knetwork Manager disappeared after upgrades so no wifi.
