wu-ftpd is known for having security problems - RedHat 9 comes with vsftpd which is much more secure. Unless you have a specific reason I would install vsftpd.

The problem is that because you're building the package from source, it's not completely integrated in with Red Hat's setup.

You can copy one of the other things in /etc/xinetd.d and modify it to match ws-ftpd, but I agree with the previous poster -- you're better off with vsftpd. It's what Red Hat uses by default for FTP now, it's on the CDs, and it will put a vsftpd file in /etc/xinetd.d for you, so that it's easy to get xinetd to work with it.

If you're using this box inside a firewall, and you really like ws-ftpd, go ahead and use it (but remember, since it's not an RPM, you're going to have to do all the work of integrating it into the system, and the system won't realize it's there. If it ever feels the need for an ftp server program, it's going to look at the RPM database and say "nope, no ftp servers here".

If this box is going to be on the Internet, bite the bullet and switch to vsftpd (or some other secure ftp server). Security was the biggest problem with ws-ftpd.

Hope this helps,
