Question Help configuring linux server as router/gateway

In my previous configuration ( previous DSL provider)
I was issued a static IP address
I assigned that to eth1 which I connected to the DSL modem
eth0 was connected to local hub.

I had it such that all computers on the local network now had internet access.

One problem that I now have is that eth1 is not dynamically set (pppoe).

What are some of the methods that I can now use to give internet access to my local network, through the eth1?

1. Would it be easier to get a router? ( See previous posting on Earthlink router)

2. Is there a way to set up the network configuraton ( using RH8.0) to use the dynamically assigned IP as a gateway for the rest of the network?

Thanks
Larry

There is a easy to set up iptables script named arno iptables-firewall. It took me about 10 minutes to set up a firewall/gateway using it. You can get it sourceforge.com.
It is preferable to use a router to a computer. But I have not been hacked since I set this one up. Most crackers start out with a portscan then try to exploit an open port. So set it up to drop all protscans and ping request.

if your budget permits, always use a dedicated piece of hardware for routing. I'll grant that linux kernels provide a much higher level of firewall configuration that most low-end devices (linksys, smc etc.) but that is something different than providing a route out to the Internet.
