Help a newbe compile HostAp

I need help with my first attempt installing anything on my slack box.

I read the README for the hostap build 0.0.4 and I assume that I will be running a make pci command to compile what I need.

I set the kernel in the make file to point to /usr/src/linux/kernel
&
I set the pcmcia in the make file to point to /usr/src/linux/drivers/pcmcia

Are these the correct directorys?

I ran a make pci and received the following results...

root@SLACKER9:/home/hostap-0.0.4# make pci
Makefile:20: /usr/src/linux/kernel/.config: No such file or directory
Makefile:28: *** PCMCIA_PATH doesn't contain valid pcmcia-cs source. Stop.
root@SLACKER9:/home/hostap-0.0.4# make pci
Makefile:28: *** PCMCIA_PATH doesn't contain valid pcmcia-cs source. Stop.

Do I need to re-compile the kernal or will the installation of the is do it for me?
Can anyone point me the correct direction?
