I recently installed Red Hat Linux 7.1 from a CD Set that was included with "Red Hat Linux 7.1 Bible". The install went fine, but I have a few problems:
1. I have installed/configured 2 NIC's (3COM 3C905b & C, I have verified that both are working properly) and setup the necessary networking and firewall files to access the internet. I can sucessfully connect to the internet via my Linux box, but I can not access the internet via one of my Windows client machines. I can ping the linux box from the Windows client and vice-versa, but I can not use a DHCP assigned IP address or a static IP. I have tried both ways, but neither works. I really want to use DHCP to access the internet rather than static IP addressing.
2. Part 2 of question one. I can not seem to find the necesary DHCP files in order to configure it properly. I have tried to re-install the necessary DHCP files, thinking that they were possibly missed during the install, but when I try to re-install the package, I receive an error.
3. SAMBA: I can not seem to get this application working properly either. But, this is the smallest of my problems right now.
I really need to get the firewall going. My machines are dead in the water until I can get this going.
I have tried the step-by-step instructions included on the various Linux help sites, but I have not had any success. If anyone could help, or point me to a good resource site, I would really appreaciate it.
****update*****
After about 4 more hours of fighting and surfing the 'net, I was able to configure the firewall and share the internet connection with no problems. If someone can point me to the right location to find help for the other 2 problems, I would really appreciate it
3 hours later........
I have found a really useful tool named "Webmin" (http://www.webmin.com/). It really took a lot of the guess work out of configuring my Linux Red Hat 7.1 system for firewall protection with DHCP. It configured such services as SAMBA, DHCP and Apache just to name a few. Webmin configured my linux system in about an hour what has taken me weeks of troubleshooting to try to correct the problems. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who is new to the Linux world as I am !!
