Create a driver for currently unsupported hardware. This benefits both you (you learn how to code a driver and reverse-engineer a product) as well as the community if you release the code under GPL. It doesn't much matter what hardware you select, so long as there is currently no support at all for it. A few Google searches should insure that the device is available for this purpose. You can even search for devices that have a 'bounty' on them, and get paid for your work.
