Unhappy GProFTPd

I have a Mandrake 10.1 box running as a ProFTPd box with the GProFTPd graphic client, all my users are set up and it seems that it is working because if I come from outside to the ftp address it asks me for my user name and password, once I type it in it just sits there until the time expires...
on th GProFTPd graphc it shows the connection but tells me the password was incorrect...and I knwo it is correct as I set the user up.
I did run the Mandrake updates could that have affected the settings???

Make sure the files each user can access have the correct user ownership and permissions..

Also make sure each user has a valid linux login/password and shell available.
