going external with apache2

Hi all,

SuSe 9.1 - learning every day - bit by bit.. Like what I see..

Have now reached a level where I would like to take apache 2 further.. Meaning: I can now run it for internal use - by being able to view my own website from the browser on my local SuSE box..
But unable to view the website from my WIN boxes on the same network..?

Also I start being curious to find out how I can run my own website externally - that is: on the internet..
I own several domains - hosted with an ISP - but would like to host them all from my SuSE box..
I have read a lot online - and also in a book: LINUX Apache Web Server Administration 2nd edition by Charles Aulds - but getting confused about where and how to start..

First things first:
When I open YaST - Network Services - I see a lot of diff. features, starting with DHCP Server and so forth..
Which one(s) involves the apache2 setup for external use..?
I'm not a complete novice into computing - but it's a bit confusing not to know which features to include in one topic..for a start..

Sounds like your firewall is stopping you. Open YaST and go to "Security snd Users" -> "Firewall"
Now click next for "Reconfigure..." choose your networks card(s).
On the next screen you will have to mark "htt" and possibly "HTTP with SSL"
click next and you should be up and running.

As for the Apache2 it should answer to both lo (127.0.0.1) and your network cards.

Hi ugge,

You were right.. It was the firewall..
Now I can access my web-page on the SuSE box - from other network PCs..
Good one..

OK - then comes the next big Q..
How do I set up my own domains and web-pages on the SuSE box - with apache2 - instead of having them hosted by an ISP..?

Or is this too complex to describe here in this forum..?

This would involve learning how to setup and administer the DNS server.
Have a look at www.tldp.org under How-To's. There you would find some files about DNS.
Depending on your knowledge of DNS you would benefit from reading some books/tutorials about it.
