getting samba working

Having a tough time getting SAMBA going. Starting to wonder if it is even running. The rpms are definatley isntalled. I have an smb.conf file that I have been editing with little success.

I have a swat 901/tcp line in my /etc/services file, however http://200.200.200.249:901 does not work (connection refused by remote host). using 127.0.0.1, venus (the server name) and local host instead of my IP does not help.

the command smbstatus gives this:
[root@venus /etc]# smbstatus
Couldn't open status file /var/lock/samba/STATUS..LCK
what's that mean? That doesn't sound good!

Been reading through O'reilley's online Samba book, which says that most of the installation should be in /usr/local/samba, however I don't even have this directory. What does that mean?

I'm a clueless newbie.

run 'service smb status' to actaully see if samba is running or not, if it's not use 'service smb start' to start it. and remember to use testparm to test the smb.conf file
