Hello there...I am running Linux 7.2 on my LAN. I use a linksys router on my LAN and use it as my DCHP server. My linux machine grabs a private ip address from it and I am able to ping all LAN devices HOWEVER I can not seem to browse the internet. I cannot however ping an external URL. I have used netstat -rn to view the route table and the default gw is correct (points to router).

Can anyone help me out here...I am just looking to get out to the net.

PS by the way when I do type a URL in the browser it the ERROR I get is "Host Unknown"

Hi,

sounds like you dont have any DNS entries setup.
Your ISP should provide you with the IP address's to use for this. (Usually 2 used)
You could test this theory by pinging an external IP or trying to http to the IP name rather than the URL.
For instance www.bbc.co.uk is same as http://212.58.224.125

Thanks for the reply...I can't ping any external IP address...not even in decimal notation...the linksys router has all the DNS functionality assigned to it and therefore by setting it as the default gw it should handle those requests...any other suggestions????
